A conventional basic metabolic panel contains eight blood measurements. It groups information about glucose, electrolytes, calcium, and kidney-related waste products. “Basic” describes the panel, not the importance of any individual finding.

Carbon dioxide on this panel is a blood chemistry measurement. It is not the same thing as measuring how much carbon dioxide is in a room. Likewise, a creatinine result is not itself a direct count of working kidney units.
What a BMP does not contain
A BMP does not include the blood-cell counts in a CBC. It also does not contain all the additional protein and liver-associated measurements in a conventional comprehensive metabolic panel. A thyroid test or A1c is a separate test unless an ordering package explicitly includes it.
Commercial package names may bundle several panels. Read the component list instead of assuming a product called “complete wellness” has a standard definition. The panel names BMP and CMP have conventional contents; a marketing title does not establish the whole order.
How to use this map
Use it to identify unfamiliar report entries and to ask what the panel was intended to investigate. Do not use it to assign a diagnosis to a particular combination of flags. Results depend on the clinical situation, medicines, preparation, and other findings.
Collection usually involves a venous blood sample. Fasting may be requested depending on the order. Confirm the instructions with the ordering team, and keep the report's own units and reference intervals attached to each value when discussing it.
