Package price tells you what you pay for the item. Unit price tells you the cost of a standard amount, such as an ounce, liter, or count. Both matter, but they answer different questions.
A worked shelf comparison
Imagine a 12-ounce package costing $3.60 and an 18-ounce package costing $4.50. The first costs $0.30 per ounce; the second costs $0.25 per ounce. The larger package has the higher checkout price and the lower unit price. These are hypothetical prices used to explain the calculation.

Divide price by quantity using the same unit. A per-pound label and a per-ounce label need to be put on the same basis before comparison.
The denominator can change the answer
Check whether a product is sold by weight, volume, count, or another measure. Concentrates and ready-to-use products may not provide the same amount of usable product per package. Read preparation instructions and avoid inventing a conversion that the label does not support.
Promotional conditions also matter. A discount may require buying several items or using a membership. Use the price you would actually pay under the terms available to you.
Lower unit cost is not the only criterion
A larger package is poor value if much of it will be wasted or cannot be stored safely. Product suitability and the amount you need remain part of the decision.
Unit pricing is useful because it exposes one part of the comparison. It does not decide quality, preference, or affordability for you. Read both the checkout commitment and the standardized cost before choosing.
